Don’t be fooled by the labels – Skincare guide to shop Natural

The pace of growth in the Beauty Industry, especially ‘Skincare' as a market segment, is touching new heights day by day and with that comes its various challenges.

Personal care, like it sounds, should be very personal which sadly isn’t the case anymore because the brands and their marketing and advertising strategies can influence you to buy whatever they want to sell you. Now the question is how to become a conscious and responsible buyer, well that’s all we’re going to talk about today.

The Clean way!

Our beauty and personal care market is flooded with labels calling their brands “clean” but can we really trust them? If so, then can we call them ‘Natural and Organic skin care products'?

To clear the confusion, not all clean brands make Organic skin care products and ‘Natural' is different from ‘Clean' beauty labels. If you have been reading about the beauty Industry then you must be aware about those serious accusations against some really well known brands and how their ‘clean' products actually contain some dangerous chemicals which can even cause cancer. These hot topics have started a trend in the skincare market, raising the demand for natural skincare and beauty products.

What’s Natural Skincare?

Clean is actually a very unregulated term in beauty industry, the concept of clean is based on third party testing and the ingredients that go into the making, can or can not be natural.

Natural beauty is all about purity, the ingredients are derived naturally and the products feel like they’re made at home with natural ingredients, not like lab-made chemical formulations.

Why Organic and Natural?

First and foremost, we don’t want to put something on our face which has toxic ingredients because ultimately our skin will absorb all of it and it will travel to the bloodstream. Another reason why we should actually shop consciously is because when we wash our face or body, the chemicals flow down the drain, don’t break down and get accumulated in our ecosystem. Not just that, the manufacturing of these chemical based products involve nasty processes and byproducts.

What our skincare should ‘NOT' have

We all know that ingredient list is important but we can’t always read and understand every single Ingredient so here’s a quick checklist that you can follow to understand your product better, avoid these ingredients as much as possible.

•Formaldehyde

Mostly found in shampoos, is easily absorbed through the skin and can cause cancer related symptoms.

•Parabens

This is a very popular preservative and various forms of parabens are added to almost all types of skincare and haircare products, almost all of them which have ‘aqua’ in it. Parabens can actually mess up our hormones and develop serious health issues.

•Nitrosamines

This is actually something which is present in all our products but is so hidden that it’s not even on the ingredient list, it’s toxic, can potentially cause cancer due to prolonged exposure and it’s formed when certain chemical ingredients are mixed together.

•Phthalates

Found majorly in perfume, nail polish and soaps, this toxic chemical is a form of fragrance and is very harmful for not just our skin but overall health too.

•Fragrance/ Parfum

We don’t need to look for it in the ingredient list, almost everything has fragrance and most of the time we are not even that bothered, but it can irritate our skin and is really very harmful. Only safe form of fragrance is that which comes from essential oils and natural ingredients, that too should be as mild as it can be.

There used to be a time when Organic and Natural skin care products looked all similar and alike, but today we have several options, various homegrown brands are creating fabulous formulations with safe and nourishing ingredients, one such brand is Ikkai. Ikkai is a natural skincare brand and their skincare range is organic and safe for all skin types.

We hope this was helpful, let’s together switch to a better and ethical shopping approach, changes do take time but it will be all worth it!
