Can I get a tan while wearing sunscreen? All about – SPF and PA

It’s 2020, long gone the time when people used to sit and enjoy the sun to get a tan bronze glow! Not anymore we guess but with all the myths around tanning and sunscreen, whether or not it can prevent tanning, here’s a complete guide to have the best sun protection for your skin.

What’s up with SPF and PA?

SPF or Sun Protection Factor is the ability of your sunscreen to shield your skin, basically it’s a factor used to measure the time one can take to get a bad tan in the sun if they’re not wearing any sunscreen, which is generally 10-20 minutes. SPF indicates the protection grade from UVB rays and PA indicates the protection grade from UVA rays.

The higher the SPF, better and more effective it is. SPF 15 can block up to 94 percent of sun’s harmful rays, SPF 30 can do this for up to 97 percent and SPF 45 and above, can give you about 98 percent protection from the sun. It is advised to reapply your sunscreen every two to four hours.

PA has ratings, the ‘+’ indicates the level of protection, the more the merrier! Always go for a broad spectrum sunscreen, SPF 50 and PA+++ and yes, you need a sunscreen when you’re indoor.

Can I tan when sunscreen’s on?

Yes! Sunscreen can’t save you from a tan, it may prevent the damage, might even protect your skin from baking red but you’ll still end up having some tan.

Put on a De-Tan Face Mask

If you are looking for a safe skincare tip to get rid of those tan lines, try a de-tan face mask made with aloe gel and honey. Aloe gel can calm the inflammation and honey will repair your skin, mix them in equal parts and apply it twice a day for about 20 minutes, rinse off with cold water and pat dry. Additionally, you can spray some cooling mist to repair your skin barrier.

What to avoid?

Don’t ever wear a vitamin C based product if you are stepping out in the sun, apply and reapply your sunscreen and never use oils while you’re in direct sun exposure. The thing with Vitamin C is that it oxidizes really quick and oils can absorb the heat, both can cause serious damage to your skin and give you a bad burn.

We hope this was helpful, stay safe and stay hydrated!
